A symphony of disappearing sounds for the Great Salt Lake (Working title) is a musical composition by artist Olafur Eliasson comprising the sounds of local animals and other natural phenomena. To create the work, Eliasson is collecting field recordings from the region in consultation with local scientists. Once the work is launched, city residents and visitors will be able to experience the sound work for three to six months, as it is broadcast at regular times at a selection of sites around Salt Lake City. The audio is accompanied by a colorful, evolving light projection that unfurls upon the surface of a floating sphere installed temporarily in public space. 
By bringing the surprising sounds of the animals and the natural surroundings to urban space, Eliasson’s work highlights the intertwined, more-than-human connections between Salt Lake City and its environment. Many of the animals featured in this work are threatened or endangered. The Great Salt Lake region is a unique ecosystem, whose future is imperiled by the rapid growth of the neighboring city. Because the Great Salt Lake is an important stopover for migratory birds on the Pacific Flyway that connects North and South America, preserving the threatened body of water is critical not only for people and animals in the region but also for the entire world. 
An accompanying outreach campaign will raise awareness of the artwork and promote conservation of the threatened ecosystems around the Great Salt Lake.
