In December of 2015, Your Star shone in the night sky above Stockholm City Hall to commemorate Nobel Week and to celebrate new knowledge, dreams, and light. Held aloft by a large helium balloon, the star consists of a specially designed spherical casing tipped by a bright LED lamp. The light is powered by solar energy that was collected in midsummer and stored in a battery, thus using the summer sunlight to brighten the darkness of winter.
Your Star is accompanied by an interactive website – www.olafureliasson.net/yourstar – which includes Making Your Star, six videos that follow the emergence of an idea and its journey towards becoming an artwork. The site also offers visitors the opportunity to make their own stars in a virtual night sky.
