Located on the grounds of the medieval castle in the city of Caen, France, Votre vue amplifiée (Your amplified view, 2024) may appear stark among the ancient buildings, meadows, and chestnut trees. The tapering metallic structure is elevated on a stand well above the heads of visitors, who are encouraged to walk beneath it and look upwards into the hollow interior toward the rhombic aperture at the apex. Abutting mirrors line the inner walls, conjuring the illusion of a complex polyhedron made from myriad reflections of sky and greenery. The view changes constantly as the surrounding lighting and weather conditions shift and the viewers move.
The artwork invites visitors to pause as they explore the grounds of the castle, to reflect on their own senses, and to engage actively with the process of seeing and with their surroundings in the here and now. Eliasson has long explored the possibilities of inserting kaleidoscopes into surprising settings to alter what we see.
