Hanging just above visitors’ heads in the pentagonal courtyard of the Fünf Höfe centre in Munich, Sphere is formed from five sets of bands that coil around the artwork’s hollow core. The bands form a pattern that exhibits five-fold symmetry, so-called Ammann lines. Visible from the roof terrace and from the windows facing the courtyard as well as from below, Sphere offers up a variety of perspectives. Visitors’ eyes are drawn upwards, through the lower iris of the sphere, along its curved, interlaced interior, and out through the oculus at the top. The sculpture filters the daylight streaming into the atrium and projects an interlacing network of shadows onto the surrounding walls, shops, and passers-by.
