Seeing painting (periphery), 2024

These new paintings continue Eliasson’s colour experiments paintings, a series he began back in 2009. Painted on round canvases, the colour experiment paintings suggest alternative colour wheels to those taught in schools. Here, the circular canvases are left raw, and a pale rainbow of paint is applied to the outer circumferences. The amorphous stain that spreads out from the centre results from allowing ice to melt in a pool of black ink and bleach on the back of the canvas. As the ice melts it drives the ink to spread in unpredictable ways, to create marks that reflect the unfolding of time.
