A continuation of the artist’s interest in navigational instruments, tools that imply movement and our inherently experimental engagement with space, this compass uses a magnet to direct an oblong, wooden needle along the north-south axis. Circumscribed by a steel ring, half of the needle’s faces are painted red, with the others painted white. The artist’s exploration of compasses springs from the way that the instrument, by virtue of its steady indication of north, allows us to situate ourselves in relation to a map or a grid, locating us within a context. In fact, compasses orient us not only geographically but also socially. The particular visual sensation of the compass – needles to the north – is something we all share; the compass binds us to one another through our subjective faculties of sensation.
