Complex geometrical spheres appear to hover in space, one at each level of the central staircase of Istanbul Modern. Upon closer inspection, the viewer discovers that the spheres are actually illusions created by semicircular segments mounted to circular mirrors. The reflections visually complete the segments, producing the virtual spheres that unite actual space and reflection.
Each of the three forms is slightly different from the previous one, with the geometry becoming more complex as one ascends from ground floor to the top level.
The curving forms and the fragmentary reflections in this work enter into dialogue with the straight lines and right angles of the new museum building designed by Renzo Piano. As viewers change position and move from floor to floor and along the landings, the artwork comes to life, activating the space through ever-changing views of the latticework geometries and the shifting perspectives and reflections of the viewers as well as the columns and stairs that surround them.
