Colourful panes of silvered, handblown glass suggest overlapping, translucent circles and ellipses. For the last decade, Eliasson has been creating glass works and watercolours inspired by the themes of colour, transparency, and layering – part of his long-standing investigation of colour phenomena across diverse mediums. By varying shades of lighter and darker glass wherever the circles and ellipses overlap and cross each other, the work conjures a simple, non-representational illusion of depth and movement in two dimensions.
The triple-presence problem is one of a series of glass works directly inspired by historical paintings of the Buddha seated in front of a mandala. In this case, however, the composition has been expanded so that the central, schematic figure is echoed by two others to its left and right. The figures stand out from the dark red background in lighter shades of yellow and orange.
The silvered, handblown panes of glass literally mirror the viewers in their rippling surfaces, bringing them into the artwork. The balanced, symmetrical composition presents an abstract, schematic image for contemplation. The threefold image and the title gesture to the great significance of the number three in many of the world’s religions and philosophies.
