This new series of photographs documents ships leaving and returning to the harbour of Reykjavik. The images capture all manner of seafaring vessels, large and small, commercial and private, military and civilian. They include tankers, fishing boats, cargo ships, yachts, tug boats, tourist ships, motor boats, and more. As with most of Eliasson’s photographic series, the photos are hung on the wall in a grid formation, suggesting a typological study of a single subject. The ships are all centred within the image frame and fill approximately the same amount of the photographic space despite their wildly diverging scales. The choice of subject in this case reflects the particular relevance of the sea to the artist, whose father, Elias Hjörleifsson, worked on a fishing boat and was often away at sea.
