Packed tightly on a steel support, forty-eight glass spheres of various sizes seem, from a distance, to burst forth from the wall with the apparent disorganisation of organic phenomena – like a cluster of water droplets or a clutch of eggs.
The back third of each sphere is hand-finished with two strips of gold leaf around a slash of silver in the middle. As a result, the spheres change colour and quality in synch as you move past the work. Approached frontally, the silvered glass reflects an inverted fisheye view of the surrounding environment. As the viewer shifts to the side, the spheres fill with a golden yellow hue reminiscent of amber or of a sunset. Only when they are looked at from a strong angle does the clarity of the glass become apparent and the reflections dissolve.
The dewdrop agora emerged from Eliasson’s ongoing exploration of optical devices, mirrors, and lenses. As viewers walk around the work, they experience themselves in a visually unfamiliar manner, echoed by multiple, inverted reflections. By magnifying thus the viewers’ every movement, The dewdrop agora invites them to retrace and examine their perceptual orientation.
