This dynamic composition of colourful hand-blown mirror glass panes is based on a lens flare – the rings and circles of light that appear in a camera’s lens when it is pointed towards the sun or another bright light. Resulting from the physics of the lens, flares are generally considered undesired disturbances. In this series of works, however, they are transformed into the central element to be explored as a governing principle for creating an object of beauty. As part of Eliasson’s longstanding investigation of colour phenomena, the flare works relate to his watercolours and paintings as well as to other glass works. The colourful panes of silvered glass present the full breadth of colours in the visible light spectrum, from red to orange to yellow, green, blue, and purple. Variations in darkness and hue where the circles and ellipses overlap create an intuitive illusion of transparent layering, a subtle sense of depth and motion. The tiny bubbles and irregularities in the glass surface, evidence of the skilled handicraft behind its production, add an element of fluidity to the sense of movement in the artwork.
