A large golden ring appears to float in the centre of the Takenaka lobby, passing through the ceiling into a parallel space revealed by apertures above the visitors’ heads. Upon closer inspection, it becomes clear that this is an illusion created by half a ring that has been mounted to the ceiling amid an arrangement of circular mirrors. The reflections in these mirrors visually complete the ring, making it appear to traverse the boundary between the actual room and the reflected space. This doubled world, seemingly united by the illusion of the ring, generates a subtle, intriguing effect that subsumes viewers and their surroundings into the artwork.
