A weathered log, painted green and red at either end, hangs from the ceiling by a steel wire and indicates magnetic north. The log is a piece of driftwood harvested from the Icelandic coast, where it ended up after being carried by the ocean from abroad; Iceland has no forests. The top and one side of one half of the log have been planed down to flat surfaces, and the exposed wood painted green. Along the other half, the bottom and the opposite side were planed flat, and the exposed surfaces painted red. A magnetic rod suspended from the driftwood orients the red half towards the north, like the needle of a compass. A compass refers to a frame of reference beyond our specific location and immediate perception. Knowing that all compasses are in sync makes us realise that we too are all part of something shared.
