At the centre of Overdeepening are two half-rings that appear as full rings when completed by their reflections. The resulting illusory rings seem to traverse the reflective surfaces of the mirror and the pond, creating the impression that the ‘space’ in the mirror is a simple extension of the physical space of the viewer. The word ‘overdeepening’ describes the additional depth of a glacial valley as carved out by a glacier beyond the normal level of erosion; the artwork adds additional spatial depth to the park through this spatial illusion. On a symbolic level, the mirror can be seen as representing the mind, the reflective surface of the pond the emotional subconscious, and the rings the physical body that supports the mind and emotions.
