Orientation lights for rising seas, 2023
Five lamps divide the desert landscape into distinct zones of coloured light during the day and night. The cylindrical lamps contain 360-degree, solid-acrylic lenses that amplify and direct the light of the bulb so that it is visible from afar. Segments of each cylinder are blacked out, making the lamps directional, while other sections are covered with gels that colour the light a single tone. As a result, the work appears different according to the position of the viewer: the individual colours – five in total – are only visible to visitors approaching from a particular direction. In this way, the lamps can be used to orient oneself and navigate the landscape in a manner reminiscent of lighthouses.
