Part of a series of experiments with spiral geometry, New Berlin Sphere is created by two sets of twenty spirals, one set within the other, that coil to form a spherical surface. A myriad of triangular stainless steel panels, which appear black on the outside, are suspended from the outer set of spirals to form a fragmented opaque skin. The inner set of spirals supports a profusion of panes of colored glass in magenta, cyan, and yellow. Depending on the position of the observer, the sculpture either glows as a colourful, brightly lit sphere or floats in space as a dark, almost closed ball. Light from the bulb at the center of the sphere casts mixed hues from the glass panels onto the surrounding walls.
