Colourful panes of silvered, handblown glass are arranged to suggest transparent, overlapping circles and ellipses. For the last decade, Eliasson has been creating glass works and watercolours inspired by the themes of colour, transparency, and layering – the simplest means for achieving a non-representational illusion of depth and movement in two dimensions. The titles for many of these works were inspired by the similarity between their compositions of circles and ellipses and historical paintings of buddhas seated in front of mandalas. In this sense, the balanced, symmetrical works present an abstract, reduced image for contemplation and growth.
