Constructed from a solid piece of bronze, Olafur Eliasson's Hot mirror (2016) calls into question the presumed solidity of the material, suggesting its transformation into a liquid. The reflectivity of the highly polished, undulating surface allows the work to reciprocate the viewer's gaze within a distorted image of the surroundings. Based on studies of rippling water, a long-time interest of Eliasson’s, the work is a continuation of the artist’s investigation of the various states and phases of materials.
