Symbiotic seeing tackled themes such as coexistence and symbiosis and aimed to achieve a fundamental shift of perspective. Eliasson invited us to reflect on climate change – as a consequence of human action – and to consider the human being as part of a larger system. In the central work, Symbiotic seeing, tiny whirls, currents, and eddies formed above visitors’ heads, as the mist reacted to the body heat and movements of the people who stood beneath. Standing within the installation, visitors could hear music playing in the air: in an adjacent space, a robotic arm played a musical piece composed for cello by the Academy-award-winning composer Hildur Gudnadottir.
