Since 2009 Eliasson has produced a large number of paintings collectively known as the Colour experiments. All are painted on round canvases, often with holes at the centre, consciously suggesting a colour wheel and presenting an alternative to the simple schema taught in schools. A number of works in this ongoing series analyse the colour palettes of specific painters. The colours in this particular experiment were derived from a painting by Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840), Der Wanderer, 1818. Friedrich’s painting was abstracted into the range of colours it contains, which were then distributed proportionately around the circular canvas to form an alternative colour wheel.
