This book was published as an integral part of Your mobile expectations: BMW H2R project, a commission by BMW. To initiate the project, Olafur Eliasson engaged in a series of conversations with experts from the fields of architecture, car design, physics, and astrophysics. Focusing on temporality, perception, individual and collective mobility, form-giving, and renewable energy, his aim was to consider the car not as an object, but as being embedded in a complex set of relations and exchanges with its surroundings. The conversations with Chris Bangle, Ib Chorkendorff, Yona Friedman, Jens Hjorth, Adrian van Hooydonk and Sabine Zemelka, Caroline A. Jones, Bart Lootsma, Ricardo Scofidio, and Peter Weibel make up the textual part of the book, alongside documentary material from the first two Life in Space symposia held at Studio Olafur Eliasson in 2006 and 2007. The extensive visual material depicts the development of Your mobile expectations from the delivery of the hydrogen-powered BMW H2R car in 2005, through investigations into surface structures and various tests with frozen nets, to its current form: a double-layered skin consisting of welded steel rods and triangulated mirrors, based on a spiral geometry onto which about 2000 litres of water is sprayed and frozen. The work can thus only exist in a microclimate with sub-zero temperatures.
