On the occasion of the exhibition Orizzonti tremanti (Trembling horizons) at Castello di Rivoli, Turin, a special reading room at Castello di Rivoli Library and Research Center was dedicated to Olafur Eliasson. The room housed a variety of catalogues covering the artist’s production, starting with his very first solo exhibitions in the nineties and extending up to the present, and a selection of publications that have inspired Eliasson and Studio Olafur Eliasson over the years.

A film by SHIMURAbros.

SHIMURAbros filmed Eliasson’s exhibition Orizzonti tremanti / Trembling horizons, at Castello di Rivoli Museo d’Arte Contemporanea, in 2022.

For the exhibition, Eliasson constructed six immersive wedge-shaped chambers inside the long gallery wing of Castello di Rivoli. Entering into these optical device–like artworks, the viewer encountered 360-degree panoramic spaces that seemed far larger than physically possible – an optical illusion created through abutting mirrors. The mirrors also reflected ripples of light projected off the surfaces of water onto screens, creating complex patterns that unfolded around the viewers in fluid motion.

Eliasson says of the artworks: ‘Standing inside these kaleidoramas, you may feel as if you were watching time unfold. It is an opportunity to reconsider your sense of scale and time, like when you study images from a deep-space telescope, which come from the very limits of our imagination.’

Olafur Eliasson: Orizzonti tremanti, 2022-2023

Six optical-device-like artworks populated the long gallery of Castello Rivoli known as the Manica Lunga. Eliasson calls these works, which were inspired by scientific instruments and cabinets of curiosity, kaleidoramas, a portmanteau of the words kaleidoscope and panorama. The interiors of the wedge-shaped structures seemed larger than physically possible – the result of an optical illusion created through abutting mirrors. Visitors entered from below the constructions or faced straight on to watch as projections of illuminated lines, forms, and patterns unfolded in fluid motion upon panoramic screens. The light shows were generated in real time using spotlights reflected off an adjacent basin of water or shone through a system of lenses. The visual compositions swelled and subsided according to the behaviour of the water or the properties of the optical instruments – some in gentle waves, others in violent trembling.
