Since 2008 Eliasson has collected large trunks from the beaches of northern Iceland, where wood from as far away as Siberia regularly washes up. Driftwood was long an important source of lumber in Iceland, where less than one per cent of the land is covered with forest. Eliasson often uses the wood as a material in his works or presents it in museums and public space as a readymade. In More-than-human friends, each piece of driftwood has been painted with a different shade of blue that fades from one side of the log to the other. The title is an allusion to recent movements to extend legal rights to plants, animals, and natural phenomenon, such as rivers, mountains, and glaciers.
