The surface of a glass sphere resting on a pedestal is covered with a geometric pattern. The sphere has been silvered and then painted flat black. Thin lines removed from the silvering and paint along certain circumferential segments create the surface’s geometric pattern. When viewers peer into the sphere, these interstitial voids reveal a mesmerizing infinitude, as the work’s geometry is reflected again and again in the mirror finish that coats the sphere’s inner surface. With this sphere, Eliasson continues to explore the geometric vocabulary of three-dimensional addition and subtraction that he began examining with Einar Thorsteinn fifteen years ago.
