navigational instrument

The word binnacle – a bastardisation of the Latin term for ‘dwelling place’ – is used to describe a container for navigational instruments or the housing of a ship’s compass. Navigational instruments have long inspired Olafur Eliasson. According to the artist, compasses, by virtue of their steady indication of north, orient us not only geographically but also socially. They gesture to a common point of orientation that transcends our subjective perspectives.
